Slum of Apapa Iganmu: Eko o ni baje o!

CONCERNED NIGERIAN
Lagos state, former Federal capital of Nigeria which is now the country's famous commercial city is without mincing words a ball of fire. Having an estimated population of over 15 million people coming from different sub regions of the country, eko as it is fondly called is a  haven for investment. It accommodates the highest number of business enterprise in the country. The state is known for its industrious and merchandising policy and this explains why it is the most populous although, this is debatable.
In recent time, Lagos State Governor, SAN Raji Fashola has been active in changing the face of the state. A whole lot of infrastructures have been installed from creating a functional transport system through BRT to building of bridges, road repairs, practical taxation scheme, environmental progression, and many more projects underway. To turn a blind eye to these improvement in the state would be what you call bad belle. Although Lagos state isn't yet the ideal city-state many would want to refer to, it is however a work in progress which will require a transparent and incorruptible government for it to get to the desired end. That is perhaps why some people will rather live under the bridge than go back to their village homes. The sham that Lagos state breeds millionaires is what has driven many out of their comfort zones in their hometown to start a new life that is somewhat incomparable to the former.

There is a common saying which goes: 'the love of money is the root to all evil'. This is true, no doubt, but in recent time, I have found an added result for the love of money. Not only does it lead to calamities but even disrupts people from making good choices.  When human beings intentionally subject themselves to inhumane and run-down conditions, thus, embracing destruction, then we might have to start questioning our rationality.
There are some areas in Lagos state even with the acclaimed development that still is unfit for habitation. For example the Apapa Iganmu axis.  Since my last visit to that area, I have come to nurse hatred for the government. Beyond my disgust for the negligence of duty by our leaders, was extreme environmental pollution in every ramification, severe flooding of streets as a result of bad drainage system, horrifying roads, poor housing structures,  if only there were better words to describe the plague in this area.
The living condition is so extreme that pigs roam the streets. It is even more nerve racking to know that the road in the area has for years been contracted for repair since the emergence of this government. What could be the reason for such disregard and thoughtlessness? It’s disturbing to know that this much laxity is tolerated.  It is not surprising that people sleep and wake up in this slum of Apapa Iganmu. After all, what is important is that a roof over the head is available, regardless of what it may seem.

Please note that this is not an attempt to slander anyone.  If we don't begin to address issues like this, it will subsequently become a forgotten project and the worst case being that such garbage turns into a phenomenon.  Something must be done to improve the standard of living in that area. People cannot continue to remain in that kind of condition. This is an appeal to the Lagos state government to remember the promise made to the people before it got voted in. Everyone has and deserves a right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
Help spread the word.
